Guelaguetza – Mondays on the Hill – 2

We were woken at 6am (this time not by an earthquake) by the insistent pounding of drums and (I have to say this) the out-of-tune marching bands – at least we’re yet to detect any recognisable tune – it’s more of a free-for-all of jangling notes, played mainly with the object of making a lot of noise. Yet, somehow, it all comes together, in a charming Mexican way. And is brilliant for getting people on their feet.

The light here is incredible and it’s hard not to post endless pictures of coloured walls and shadows, but it’s the people that are the most colourful – again, it all comes together to make Oaxaca the most colourful place we’ve ever been. And not just colourful, the buzz here is warm and happy, carefree, generous and inclusive – and that’s intoxicating…
