It’s that time of the year again, Melbourne Cup, when the nation stops for a horse race. Held on the first Tuesday in November since 1861, the Melbourne Cup is one of the world’s richest races. But some 3,065 kilometres away in tropical Palm Cove Far North Queensland, there’s an altogether different race, the 21^st anniversary of the Melbourne Cup fundraiser at Nu Nu Restaurant with, ahem, a far smaller and perhaps more shambolic race along the sands of Palm Cove. But the fun was all at Nu Nu, decked out completely in pink for it’s ‘Fabulous Flamingos’ theme, raising AU$125,000 for the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation. It looked like a whole load of fun but sadly we couldn’t secure tickets as they were sold out in less than 10 seconds, but we did get to experience the fun, frivolity and, of course, the horse race along the beach as local bystanders. Perhaps next year…
